World’s fastest passenger jet goes supersonic in tests

(CNN) – The race to resume supersonic passenger flights decades after Concorde’s retirement offered a glimmer of excitement Monday when plane maker Bombardier announced high-speed achievements while confirming the launch of its new business jet.

The Canadian company said in the in-development Global 8000 Will be “the world’s fastest and longest range purpose-built business jet”.

With a capacity of up to 19 passengers, a range of 8,000 nautical miles (14,800 kilometers) and a top speed of Mach 0.94, the next plane is expected to enter service in 2025, according to a Bombardier statement.

The news comes after the Global 7500 test vehicle broke the sound barrier during a performance flight last May, achieving speeds above Mach 1.015.

The aircraft with the NASA F / A-18 chase plane has also become the first transport category aircraft to fly supersonic with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as a result of the flight, Bombardier says.

“Global 8000 Aircraft leverages the outstanding features of the Global 7500 Aircraft, providing our customers with a new era of flagship aircraft,” Bombardier President and CEO Eric Martell said in a statement released Monday.

Flight testing for the Global 8000 has already begun on the Global 7500 flight-test vehicles. Bombardier says the incoming aircraft will also have a cabin height equivalent to 2,900 feet.

The Global 8000 is one of the many developments in the many efforts to increase the speed of passenger aircraft more than two decades after Concorde’s retirement.

Last year, United Airlines announced that it could offer a supersonic route in early 2029 after making a deal to buy 15 supersonic jets.

Meanwhile, located in Colorado Boom supersonic The X-B1 is completing ground testing on a prototype aircraft for its Overture jet, designed to seat between 65 and 88 people, with the goal of flying over more than 500 transac- tional routes that will benefit from the aircraft’s Mach-2.2 speed.

Unfortunately, Florida-based aviation startup Arien collapsed last year, months after announcing plans for a Mach 4+ commercial airliner called the Aerion AS3.
