(CNN) – It’s been an unusual two years for the aviation industry. After months of epidemiological grounding, travel has returned, not with a bang, but with a little whimsy, as many global airlines and airports struggle with cancellations and delays.

In the midst of this turbulent travel season, Australia-based aviation safety and product rating agency has released an annual round-up of the world’s best airlines.

Qatar Airways tops the list for the second year in a row, with reporting that the carrier’s commitment to flying has been a decisive factor in the last few years. Qatar Airways also won the Excellence in Long Hole – Middle East / Africa Award.

Qatar Airways is hot on the heels of Air New Zealand, an airline that has topped the list of airline ratings six times in recent years and also came in second last year. For 2022, Air New Zealand was also recognized by as the best premium economy and economy options and the best option for long distance travel in the Pacific region.

Etihad Airways ranks third on’s list. The UAE-based airline was also praised as the Environmental Airline of the Year, as what Thomas said was a “benchmark” commitment to reduce emissions.

The number four airline is Korean Air, which also won the Cargo Airline of the Year and Excellence in Long Hole – Asia Awards, while the winner of Singapore Airlines, Best First Class and Best Lounge, ranks in the top five.

Thomas told CNN Travel that the results reflect the continued impact of Covid-19 on aviation, but did not affect the recent spike rankings in delays and cancellations.

“The current crisis in travel has played no role because it is a unique event,” said Thomas, who suggested that even current events “are not largely in the construction of airlines.”

Experts Suggested Current problems are related to staff shortages, airport problems, labor relations and the weather.

Overall, Thomas sees the rankings as a positive step on the travel industry today.
