Director Kuki Gulati says that his film “The Big Bull” is set in the stock market world and is the only similarity between the upcoming Abhishek Bachchan-starrer and Hansal Mehta’s acclaimed web series “Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story”. Mehta’s Sonilive series was released last year and featured Prateik Gandhi and Harshad Mehta in lead roles, who were involved in financial crimes in the 1980s and 1990s. According to Gulati, “The Big Bull” is a “fictional story”, depicting Bachchan as a stockbroker named Hemant Shah.
When the film’s trailer was released last week, fans drew similarities between “The Big Bull” and “Scam 1992”, even tweeting Hansal Mehta to show viewers that “inappropriate comparisons” “Do not resort to doing. In an interview with PTI, Gulati said that he was touched at the behest of the filmmaker and said that viewers would realize that the two projects are remarkably different from each other after watching the film. “Everyone deserves his view and I will respect him. To say that Hansal was very kind. This reflects the positivity that is now in the industry, where someone he likes – his work body and I cannot be compared – says ‘give them a chance’. “I just hope that people give me a chance, watch the film and realize that they are two completely different projects. I’m hoping to do our film as well as their series but if anyone wants to compare, So they are welcome.
Starring Ileana Dikruz, Nikita Dutta and Soham Shah, “The Big Bull” is set to release on Disney + Hotstar on 8 April. The film went on a halt from the floor in September 2019, when a coronavirus-inspired nationwide lockout was announced last March. The team resumed shooting in September 2020, pending approximately 10 days. Gulati said that by the time he saw “Scam 1992”, a series he saw “Anand”, he had already completed most of shooting for “The Big Bull”. The director said that since he had a different approach to the film, the idea of doing nothing was never born after the success of the film “Scam 1992”. I watched ‘Am Scam’, I had completed most of the shooting of my film. So there is nothing that I did in that regard (tweaking). We have our own story. He said, “Although I enjoyed watching the show, once you watch the film you will understand how to have a completely different approach.”
Post his 2010 directorial debut with the Vivek Oberoi-starrer film “Prince”, Gulati was keen to move to direction when writer Arjun Dhawan approached him with the idea of ”Arjun Dhawan” in 2016. Both wrote the film for the next two. For years, Gulati drew much from his experience working in the stock market in a broker’s office from 1991–92. Gulati first gave the film to director Indra Kumar, who was then making the multi-starrer “Total Dhamaal”. Kumar instead asked him to appear in the 2019 comedy as a creative director. On the set of “Total Dhamaal”, Gulati met Ajay Devgan and introduced him to the film. Gulati said that it was Devgan who suggested Bachchan’s name for “The Big Bull”, as the team needed an actor with incomparable depth who could bring Titanic’s character to the screen.
“Abhishek has got that kind of experience and depth in acting, I jumped on him when his name came up. By working with him I realized that he is not only a smart actor but also a conscious person. He brought tremendous sensitivity to the character. Produced by Kumar Mangat Pathak and Vikrant Sharma as co-producers by Devgan and Anand Pandit, the film also stars Ram Kapoor, Supriya Pathak and Saurabh Shukla.
