The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an investigation after the Alliance Air ATR aircraft landed safely after an incident involving an engine cowl. However, the flight landed safely at Bhuj airport. The reason for the inquiry is that a part of the engine’s coiling fell down during take-off from Mumbai on Wednesday morning. The four-year-old aircraft took off at 6:30 a.m., shortly after which a witness saw a cowl protecting the engine from foreign objects and other elements. The cow fell on the runway of the airport while the flight was preparing to depart.

Director General of Civil Aviation Arun Kumar said the flight landed without causing any further damage to the aircraft. Captain Amit Singh, who is an air safety expert, spoke to TOI about the incident and said that such an incident could happen after the maintenance crew removes the call for regular pre-flight checkups or repairs. Even during routine walkaround inspections it could not be further detected by the pilot. Captain Amit Singh blamed poor maintenance work for the incident.

He further added that if the Mumbai ATC had informed the pilot immediately, the flight would have ideally landed back at Mumbai airport. This indicates that the information could have been transmitted much later after the flight landed at Bhuj. The issue was reported by the Mumbai Air Traffic Controller (ATC)..

It is also possible that the crew or passengers may have noticed the missing engine cowl, and therefore, reported to the pilot, which caused the flight to eventually land at the aforementioned airport without further incident.
